Effusive Expanse, Carnegie Art Center, Mankato, 2021

ef·fu·sive (adj.) exuberant, unrestrained

1  expression of excessive enthusiasm; unduly demonstrative; lacking reserve

2  pouring freely; overflowing

ex·panse (n.) immensity, amplitude, reach

1  an uninterrupted space or area; a wide extent of anything

From negative space to positive substance, what was once waste becomes the primary subject. In the cyclical nature of life, remnants from installations past are reworked into new components that provide a fresh take on concepts and processes found frequently in my work.

Cut paper scraps are sewn into bobbin-length strands that, when multiplied, span the space and accumulate to redefine one’s typical experience of materials and gallery alike. Acrylic paint, iridescent medium, and India ink are used to create a range of mark-making and surface detail akin to weathering and other natural processes. In direct response to site-specific architectural details, the work erupts in an outpouring of shape, color, and energy reminiscent of the simultaneous splendor and decline of the seasonal change at hand.
